Ashmore Reef is thought to be the resting place of a number of shipwrecks lost in the early to middle of the 19th century.
One such shipwreck was located by the Royal Australian Navy vessel HMAS Benalla when it was surveying the northern section of Ashmore Reef.
Given the shipwreck’s potential to provide additional information on early trade routes, Silentworld Foundation decided that this reef area would be the focus of its annual fieldwork.
A team of archaeologists, photographers and divers from the Australian National Maritime Museum, the Department of the Environment, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Silentworld Foundation,
spent two weeks in January 2015 investigating shipwrecks in the vicinity of Ashmore and Boot Reefs.
