Mermaid Expedition

In January 2009 the Foundation sponsored and participated in an expedition led by National Maritime Museum archaeologists to locate the wreck of the Mermaid, Philip Parker King’s survey vessel which was lost on the Great Barrier Reef when under the command of Captain Samuel Nolbrow in 1826.

Two previous expeditions had been unsuccessful in locating the wreck of the Mermaid and we were delighted to be fortunate enough to locate the wreck site on Flora Reef and find numerous artefacts which were brought back to the National Maritime Museum of Australia for conservation and eventual display.
